Static IP Addresses Overview

Static IP addresses are often used to troubleshoot or resolve device issues, such as failing to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server or experiencing intermittent deregistration. Some customers prefer assigning static IP addresses to their phones to ensure they always know where the phones are located on the network.

When setting a static IP address, it is important to choose an IP address outside the DHCP scope or reserve the IP address for the device. This helps prevent future IP conflicts with other devices. Work with your network administrator to ensure this is done correctly.

Information Needed to Set a Static IP Address

You will need the following details:

  • IP Address – The IP address to assign to the phone.

  • Subnet Mask – The subnet mask for the network the phone will be on.

  • Default Gateway – The IP address of the router the phone will use.

  • Primary DNS – Sometimes called DNS 1; this is the primary DNS server used by the phone. By default, we use Google’s public DNS server: 8.8.8.8.

  • Secondary DNS – Sometimes called DNS 2; this is the secondary DNS server used if the primary fails. By default, we use Google’s public DNS server: 8.8.4.4.
